Algeria Takes UN Security Council Presidency, Prioritizes Palestinian Cause & African Security

Algeria has officially assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for January, marking an opportunity to advance critical issues affecting the Middle East and Africa. Under the country’s rotating presidency, which occurs monthly among the 15 member states, Algeria will lead the Security Council’s activities and focus on international diplomatic efforts.

A primary objective for Algeria’s presidency is to elevate the Palestinian cause. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf highlighted that since Algeria’s election to the Security Council, the country has played a key role in keeping the Palestinian issue at the forefront of global attention. Algeria’s leadership will continue to push for international resolutions that address the humanitarian crisis and call for greater support for Palestinians’ rights.

In addition to the Middle East, Algeria is setting its sights on the security situation in Africa, particularly the ongoing fight against terrorism. The Sahel region has been plagued by militant violence, and Algeria aims to use its presidency to foster cooperation and enhance counter-terrorism strategies among African nations and global partners.

A significant event will be an open ministerial discussion later this month, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expected to attend. This forum will provide a platform to address both the Palestinian issue and Africa’s security challenges, marking Algeria’s leadership in shaping global responses to these crises.

With its presidency, Algeria seeks to strengthen ties between the Arab League and the UN, paving the way for enhanced regional collaboration on a range of issues, including peacekeeping and humanitarian aid. As the first African nation to hold the presidency in 2025, Algeria’s leadership will be closely watched by the international community.
