In a decisive move that reflects his leadership and commitment to national stability, Chad’s Transitional National Council (TNC) has officially promoted President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno to the rank of field marshal, the highest military honor in the country. This resolution was passed on Monday with overwhelming support, as 160 members of the TNC voted in favor, six abstained, and two voted against.

The motion, which was strongly backed by government officials and a substantial portion of the council, emphasized Deby Itno’s bravery, dedication, and pivotal role in guiding the nation through its challenging transition. It highlighted his efforts to restore constitutional order following the death of his father, President Idriss Deby Itno, and to maintain peace and stability in a region fraught with security concerns.

While the promotion received widespread approval, there were some reservations regarding its timing, with a few council members questioning the appropriateness of awarding such a prestigious title amidst the ongoing political transition. However, these concerns were outnumbered by the voices of those who lauded the president’s actions, describing the honorary title as fitting for a leader who has demonstrated exceptional resolve during a turbulent period in Chad’s history.

The title of field marshal not only marks a personal achievement for President Deby Itno but also signals the government’s desire to solidify his authority and reinforce his position as the central figure in Chad’s political and military landscape. This decision comes as Chad continues to navigate a complex and sensitive transitional process, aimed at returning the country to constitutional order after a period of military rule.

For many in Chad, the elevation of President Deby Itno to field marshal serves as a symbol of confidence in his leadership and the government’s determination to stabilize the nation amidst regional and internal challenges.
