India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has arrived in Ghana for a two-day official visit to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation between Accra and New Delhi.
Jaishankar arrived in Accra on Tuesday (October 6) and was received by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, according to ModernGhana.
The visit comes as Ghana and India seek to build on their elevated bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ghana in 2025.
Ablakwa said Jaishankar’s visit would provide an opportunity for the two countries to discuss areas of mutual interest and identify new opportunities for cooperation, expressing hope that the engagements would produce agreements and initiatives beneficial to both sides.
The Ghanaian foreign minister has previously identified pharmaceutical development, agricultural mechanisation and value addition, industrialisation, job creation, scholarships and information technology partnerships as priority areas for deeper cooperation with India.
Jaishankar’s Ghana visit forms part of a broader five-day African tour from October 6-10 that will also take him to Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
During the tour, he is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and meet the leadership of the three countries to review bilateral relations and cooperation. Discussions are expected to cover trade and economic ties, development cooperation, capacity building and people-to-people relations, alongside regional and global issues of mutual interest.
In Ethiopia, Jaishankar will chair a Regional Heads of Mission conference, the ministry said, describing the trip as part of India’s effort to deepen its partnership with Africa and strengthen solidarity with the Global South.
For Ghana, the visit comes as the government seeks to strengthen strategic partnerships that can support industrial development, investment, technology transfer and job creation. Recent discussions between the two countries have placed particular emphasis on agriculture, pharmaceuticals and information and communication technology, including robotics and artificial intelligence.
The visit also follows Modi’s two-day official trip to Ghana in July 2025, during which India and Ghana agreed to expand cooperation across areas including trade, investment, agriculture, technology, education, healthcare and energy.
