Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed “Mo” Dewji is exploring fresh investment opportunities in Botswana as the southern African nation steps up efforts to attract regional capital and diversify its economy beyond its traditional reliance on diamonds.

Dewji, chief executive of Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Ltd (MeTL), met Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko and senior government officials in Gaborone to discuss potential investments through the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) and other sectors of the economy.

The businessman also held discussions with Vice President and Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe, Bank of Botswana Governor Cornelius Dekop and Neo Mooki, Chairperson of the Botswana Stock Exchange, as part of efforts to assess opportunities for investment, partnerships and possible capital market participation.

During the meeting, President Boko expressed appreciation for Dewji’s confidence in Botswana as an investment destination, describing the visit as a strong endorsement of the country’s economic prospects and reform agenda.

The president said Botswana offered vast opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs seeking to contribute to economic growth, diversification and job creation. He highlighted the country’s stable business environment, sound governance framework and investor-friendly policies as key strengths that continue to attract international and regional investors.

Boko also welcomed Dewji’s interest in expanding the footprint of MeTL Group, one of Africa’s largest privately owned conglomerates, and strengthening business partnerships in Botswana.

He said deeper collaboration between Botswana and Tanzanian businesses could help accelerate economic diversification, create employment opportunities and support shared prosperity across southern Africa.

The discussions come as Botswana pursues an ambitious economic transformation strategy aimed at reducing dependence on diamond revenues by promoting investment in sectors such as manufacturing, financial services, renewable energy, agriculture and technology.

Dewji said Botswana’s commitment to economic reform, political stability and private-sector development makes it an attractive destination for long-term investment.

Dewji’s visit underscores a growing trend of intra-African investment, as leading African business groups seek new opportunities across the continent and governments increasingly look to regional investors to drive industrialization, job creation and economic resilience.
